劇情簡介：
1945年夏天，美國本部黑手黨柯里昂家族首領(lǐng)，“教父”維托·唐·柯里昂為小女兒康妮舉行了盛大的婚禮。“教父”有三個(gè)兒子：好色的長子桑尼，懦弱的次子弗雷德和剛從二戰(zhàn)戰(zhàn)場回來的小兒子邁克。其中桑尼是“教父”的得力助手；而邁克雖然精明能干，卻對家族的“事業(yè)”沒什么興趣。
“教父”是黑手黨首領(lǐng)，常干違法的勾當(dāng)。但同時(shí)他也是許多弱小平民的保護(hù)神，深得人們愛戴。他還有一個(gè)準(zhǔn)則就是決不販毒害人。為此他拒絕了毒梟索洛佐的要求，并因此激化了與紐約其它幾個(gè)黑手黨家族的矛盾。圣誕前夕，索洛佐劫持了“教父”的養(yǎng)子、家族參謀顧問湯姆， 并派人暗殺“教父”......
