I've always felt a bit sad for weekend fathers, who are divorced and must maintain a bond with their children through visits on the weekend. Not having the opportunity for a lot of quality time, they go in for quantity? giving lots of gifts and taking the children on non stop outings. But now I can understand.I'm a weekend mom.My child, Henry, is a dog. Henry just returned to his father, Jack, after a happy stay with me.For ten days, I fed him the best food, canceled plans to stay home with him and let him sleep on the bed every night.

Jack and I broke up a year ago.But neither of us wanted to part with Henry, so we share him.Not surprisingly, Henry is a willing participant in our contest for his love. Jack now has a girlfriend, Lucy.At first she was afraid of dogs, which secretly delighted me.But that Henry, just trying to be polite(the way I taught him to be),won her over. If truth be told, as time passes, there has been a slight change in Henry' s behavior toward me.The worst was one day when Jack dropped him off for a two??????? week stay.Henry and I were in the backyard playing as Jack was driving off. When he heard Jack's truck, he ran after it for two blocks until Jack had to stop and bring him back. That hurt, especially since I had friends over at the time.In a rare conciliatory (安撫的) mood, Jack said to me, "You know, I' m his best friend, but you'll always be his mom." Whatever it takes, I plan to make sure it stays that way. 【小題1】At the writer's home, Henry________.

The Truth Can Set You Free

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.

“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”

“No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.

  “So what brings you here?”

He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.” “So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”

He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest. “Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(腫瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.

He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”

The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金發美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen. 【小題1】The author was stopped by the police officer because ______.

Think of the last time a song really moved you, or meant something to you.Listening to and

playing music affects marry different sections of the brain, affecting us physically as well..Why are we as humans so connected to music?

Making music is something that we are born with. There's a reason we refer to music as the

“universal language”;there has been no known human culture without music,.Dancingand

music came before agriculture, and possibly even before language. The fact that whale music and

human music have so much in common suggests that music may exist before humans and that we

may be latecomers to the musical scene rather than being the inventors of music.

We begin life being affected by music; babies first begin to respond to music even before

their birth,Whether or not it's true, everyone has heard that playing classical music; for your baby

supposedly helps him or her become smarter. A study done in the United Kingdom concluded that

children were able to .recognize and even preferred music that they had heard lip to three months

before birth. Although it made no difference whether it was rock music or country music, the

babies who were exposed to faster songs showed a stronger preference for that song than those

who had heard something slower. Researchers have also found that the playing of soft background

music or a mother's soft singing actually helps premature (早產的)babies. Those who were.

subjected to the music tended to gain weight faster and were able to leave hospitals earlier than

those who weren't. However, the study in the UK uncovers no links between babies listening to

music and increased intelligence or brain development.

Another experiment at the University of California at Irvine compared the puzzle-solving

abilities of 3-year-olds who were given piano lessons with those of others who sang, used

computers, or did nothing. The children studying the piano were better at the puzzles. Also, high

school students with a musical background seem to do better in their SATs,Whether it's natural

intelligence that helps the children do better in both music and math,or the music that helps

develop other areas, you can't deny the benefits of a musical background.

On the other hand, it's possible that some music and lyrics(歌詞)could be had for children

and teenagers. The lyrics of today's popular music are stated more and more clearly. A study oil

mass media and teenagers showed that a group of 14- to 16-year-olds in 10 different southeastern

cities listened to music an average of 40 hours per week. Obviously, the music they are listening

to plays a large part in their lives, and especially influences self-identity. So any bad influences

in the music will have a very direct effect on the teenagers.

Several other experiments mentioned in the American Academy of Pediatrics' policy statement on the "Effect of Music Lyrics and Music Videos on Children and Youth" supported this idea. One study from Sweden found that children who developed a preference to rock music were more likely to be influenced by their peers than by their parents. Others showed links between a predilection for heavy metal and detrimental behaviors, including taking drugs, self-killing risk,

and other risk-taking habits. The American Acajeny of Pediatries (AAP)

doesn't support the idea of censorship(檢查制度), but strongly encourages parents to monitor what their children are listening to.

50.Music is regarded as the “universal longunge” because____

51.Acording to Paragrapg 3,what afgerts bubies’ preference for songs?

  A.The tone

  B.The specal

  C.The style

  D.The lyries

"Ok," I said to my daughter as she bent over her afternoon bowl of rice. "What's going on with you and your friend I?" J. is the leader of a group of third-graders at her camp—a position Lucy herself occupied the previous summer. Now she's the one on the outs, and every day at snack time, she tells me all about it, while I offer up the unhelpful advice all summer long.

"She's fond of giving orders ," Lucy complained. "She's fat," Lucy mumbled(含糊地說) ineo he bowl "We are going upstairs," I said, my voice cold, "We are going to discuss this." And up we went.

I'd spent the nine years since her birth getting ready for this day, the day we'd have to have

the conversation about this horrible word. I knew exactly what to say to the girl on the receiving

end of the teasing(嘲笑),but in all of my imaginings, it never once occurred to me that my

daughter would be the one who used the F word一Fat.

My daughter sat on her bed, and I sat beside her.“How would you feel if someone made fun

of you for something that wasn't your fault?”I began.“She could stop eating so much,”Lucy

mumbled, mouthing the simple advice a thousand doctors and well-meaning friends and relatives

have given overweight women for years.

"It's not always that easy,”I said.“Everyone's different in terns of how they treat food”

Lucy looked at me, waiting for me to go on. I opened my mouth, then closed it. Should I tell her

that, in teasing a woman's weight, she's joined the long, proud tradition of critics who go after any

woman with whom they disagree by starting with "you're ugly" and ending with“no man would

want you and there must be something wrong with any man who does"?Should I tell her I didn't

cry when someone posted my picture and commented,“I'm sorry, but aren't authors who write

books marketed to young women supposed to be pretty?”

Does she need to know, now, that life isn't fair? I feel her eyes on me,waiting for an answer

I don't have. Words are my tools.Stories are my job. It's possible she'll remember what I say

forever, and I have no idea what to say.

So I tell her the only thing I can come up with that is absolutely true.I say to my daughter,

“I love you,and there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you,But I'm disappointed in you right now. There are plenty of reasons for not liking someone. What she looks like isn't one of them.”

Lucy nods, tears on her cheeks.“I won't say that again,”she tells me,and I pull her close,

pressing my nose against her hair. We are both quiet, and I don't know if I have said the right
