B.You are welcome to take part in the Halloween party.

C.Another impressive feature is the carved pumpkins.

D.Halloween is the most significant festival in the world.

E.You may wonder why kids dress that way.

F.In this festival you should follow some principles.

Halloween is a time to celebrate the bountiful harvest as we prepare for the winter. Coupled with this is the inescapable and memorable night of Halloween when children dress up in costumes and start to trek through the neighborhood looking for sweet treats. The Halloween cry of

  “trick-or-treat” resonates through the night.

1.________In old days, it was thought that on Halloween night, ghosts would return to this world looking for prey. In order to avoid being recognized by these demons, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark, so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. Nowadays the adults have gradually abandoned the practice of dressing up in costumes based on the fact that they can handle the offense quite easily, but the tradition still remains for children who are more likely to become the targets of the returning ghosts.

2.________Legend has it that this day marked the end of summer and the harvest. This day also marks the beginning of the dark and cold winter. This time is often associated with death. Many “spine-tingling”stories are told during the week preceding Halloween to create a frightening atmosphere. We hear many ghost stories and scary stories involving cemetery tenants rising out of their graves to stalk (跟蹤) people and we often hear about “blood-sucking” vampires searching for a bloody drink to help them maintain immortality. Of course, these are

all superstitions, not real stories, but it gets people into the spirit of Halloween.

3.________For instance, children start roaming the neighborhood until around 6 p.m. and usually continue ringing door bells and knocking on doors until around 9 p.m.. Also, there is an unwritten rule that children should only go to houses that have outside lights on as a signal that the children are welcome to come and “trick-or-treat ”. In addition, after shouting “trick-or-treat”, the children’s expectation is that they will be showered with tasty delicious sweet candy. Chocolate seems to be the favorite choice. Last but not least, supermarkets and drugstores carry a wide variety of sweets just for Halloween. One quarter of all the candy sold annually in the U.S. is purchased for Halloween. Americans spend an estimated 6 billion dollars, thus making it the second largest commercial holiday.

4.________This gourd-like orange fruit gets inscribed with ghoulish faces and is frequently illuminated with candles. The practice of decorating a “jack-o’-lantern( 南瓜燈 )” comes from an Irish folk legend about a man named “Stingy Jack” who tricked the devil a couple of times. When “Jack” died, God did not want such a person in heaven, thus throwing “Jack” back to the devil who in turn punished Jack. Jack’s punishment was to forever roam the earth with a coal burning inside the gourd. Just for this very reason you can find a number of carved pumpkins hanging on the doorsteps or on the porches everywhere.

5.________International Student and Scholar Services will be hosting our annual Halloween party on Friday, November 1, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m..Please come dressed up in your scariest costume, have a wonderful time in this party and if you miss it I am sure that you will regret it for a long time. If you still have some questions about the party to be held in honor of the festival, please see the attached poster.

  Dear_Tom,

  Thank_you_very_much_for_your_invitation.

I’d like to accept it and take this opportunity to introduce the traditional Chinese painting to foreign friends, but I’m sorry to inform you that I can’t. The reason is that I am busy preparing myself for the coming College Entrance Examination.

I strongly recommend my friend Mary who is the most suitable choice to take my place next week. She began to learn painting at an early age and has a good knowledge of the traditional Chinese painting, which, together with her active personality and perfect spoken English, will help make your activity a success.

Sorry again for any inconvenience caused by my absence.
